5 Classic Chick Flick Movies That Changed Pop Culture

Out of all the movie genres out there, we all know how chick flick films have some of the biggest influence in popular culture. Some might think that this genre isn’t really important or valuable because it’s mostly filled with lighthearted cheesy stories. However, that’s not true because many chick flick movies discuss various topics, from love and friendship to self-discovery and female empowerment, that are filled with lessons.

If you want to laugh, cry, be angry, and everything in between, here are five classic chick flick movies that really changed pop culture. Most of these movies are available on various streaming platforms, including Netflix, Disney Plus, Go Latino TV, Hulu, and many more, so you don’t have to worry about looking for them online.

Mean Girls

On Wednesdays, we wear pink. Regina George anyone? This teen comedy has taken the world by storm with its iconic characters and unforgettable spiels. The story is about a homeschooled teenager named Cady Heron who must explore an entirely new world as she enters public high school for the first time. There, she’ll find the ever so famous Regina George, a.k.a her high school’s queen bee, and her popular group of girls (bullies!).

Since Mean Girls has become more a cultural phenomenon rather than a chick flick film, you can easily find it offered in many video-on-demand streaming platforms and aired on live TV services like Sling TV.

Legally Blonde

Chick flicks won’t be complete without Reese Witherspoon. Legally Blonde is a legendary comedy movie about Elle Woods, a sorority queen determined to prove her worth to her ex-boyfriend by attending Harvard Law School. While underestimated for her appearance, Elle uses her unique strengths and overcomes challenges with wit, determination, and a touch of pink. This movie easily became a pop culture icon, inspiring countless memes, catchphrases, and even a Broadway musical.

A Walk to Remember

Are you ready to bawl your eyes out? A Walk to Remember is the type of movie that will give you the same feeling even after you re-watch it countless times. The film is about a popular but rebellious teenager named Landon Carter, who gets into trouble and is forced to participate in community service, where he meets Jamie Sullivan, the kind and intelligent daughter of the town’s minister.

Despite their different backgrounds, they develop a deep connection, and Landon begins to see the world through new eyes. However, Jamie is keeping a secret that threatens their future together. This movie is another easy find on many TV and streaming platforms, even on DISH TV packages.

The Devil Wears Prada

Were you able to watch that clip of Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Meryl Streep during their mini reunion at the Grammys? If you weren’t able to understand the reference, you’ve missed out one of the best chick flick movies out there. The Devil Wears Prada is a story about a fashion comedy drama about Andy Sachs who’s a recent college graduate who wanted to become a journalist.

She then lands a coveted assistant job at Runway magazine, home of the ruthless and demanding Miranda Priestly, the editor-in-chief. Despite not being her preferred job and her lack of fashion knowledge, she strives to earn the trust of Miranda – but it wasn’t a walk in the park.

Mamma Mia!

If you’re familiar with ABBA or their song Mamma Mia, you’ll definitely enjoy this movie. This movie is about the story of Sophie, a young woman on the eve of her wedding, who secretly invites three men from her mother’s past to the ceremony, hoping to discover who her father is.

As these potential dads reunite with Donna, Sophie’s free-spirited mother, their old relationships and hidden feelings resurface, which creates hilarious and heartwarming moments along the way.

There’s no doubt that these chick flick movies have impacted pop culture in ways more than one. If you’ve watched them already, good for you. But if this will be your first time watching these films, you’re definitely in for a treat because every minute you spend watching them will be well worth it. Happy watching!
