Tron was released in July 1982 and was a massive hit making over $4 million opening weekend on it’s way to $50 million worldwide. I saw Tron in the theaters during it’s initial run and was mesmerized by the movie.
Tron is a science fiction classic mixing live action with ground breaking visual effects; at least for 1982. When Flynn is transported into the mainframe the effects come alive. The games are all visually striking from the discus battle, to hyperball, my favorite the light cycles and the ominous Recognizer. The giant floating ships with legs.
Tron was a massive hit back in 1982, although Disney declared it a financial bomb. Which may be why it took 30 years to get a sequel.
Over the years there have been books, comic books, a TV Series and multiple arcade games and one sequel.
Tron: Legacy hit theaters in December 2010 and continued the story of Flynn, this time with Flynn’s son Sam getting sent into the computer. Tron: Legacy was another visual effects marvel and a hit at the box office.
Before Tron: Legacy was released there were already rumors a a third film being written. In 2015 Disney officially greenlit the third Tron movie. After a decade of pandemics, strikes and other development delays, Tron: Ares has arrived.
The official synopsis for Tron: Ares is short:
TRON: Ares follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.
Jared Leto stars as Ares, Evan Peters as Julian Dillinger and Greta Lee as Eve Kim. Jeff Bridges reprises the role of Kevin Flynn and Gillian Anderson is starring in an undisclosed role. Nine Inch Nails composed the soundtrack with all original music!
The trailer looks amazing. With the light cycles in the real world, cutting a police car in half. When the large-than-life Recognizer came into view I may have squealed a little. The trailer builds in intensity as the Recognizer comes into full view and Nine Inch Nails music is grinding away.
The trailer is short and extremely effective. It doesn’t give away the movie, like most modern trailers and it leaves the viewer wanting more. It’s apparent Tron: Ares is continuing the visual effects mastery of the previous movies.
The trailer has a great retro vibe to it from the visuals to the soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails, who never disappoints.
Tron: Ares hits theaters nationwide on 10 October 2025.
