Retro Pull List: February 2021

It’s time once again to look at some new versions of old tales in the Retro Pull List: February 2021 Edition. Every month I look through the Previews catalog for 70s, 80s, and 90s inspired titles coming to your local comic store. As always, contact your local shop for availability and most stores will go ahead and special order any of these titles for you.

For digital purchases visit ComiXology or ComiXology Unlimited. To purchase physical copies online, click on the comic book title below and visit our affiliate Things From Another World to purchase which will also help out The Retro Network at no further expense to you. On with The Retro Pull List: February 2021 edition…

X-Men Legends #1 from Marvel Comics

Fabian Nicieza is back. This new series is going to tell all new stories that take place in past X-Men continuity. Between the issues never before told tales that happen during your favorite X-Men runs from decades ago. It might be tough to keep up with House of X and Powers of X and all the current stuff but much easier to jump back into familiar waters.

Transformers: Beast Wars #1 from IDW

The Beast Wars cartoon is 25 years old?! I can feel my back hurt just from reading that. Beast Wars was a reboot/continuation of the Transformers franchise where the vehicle based battle is replaced by transforming animals. The good Maximals now fight the evil Predacons. Also, the updated name of “Optimus Primal” is still a stroke of genius.

Sonjaversal #1 from Dynamite

Red Sonja has been around for years and Dynamite has done a great job recently building her up as a well rounded character and more than the chain mail bikini. Now it’s time to do the same work with all of the other Sonjas. Other Sonjas? That’s right, not every Sonja in every possible dimension would be Red. Say hello to Blue Sonja, Green Sonja, Orange Sonja, Saint Sonja, Hell Sonja, “and many many many more”.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Faith #1 from Boom! Studios

This isn’t a new ongoing series, just a one shot. Telling Faith’s origin as she slips back into some of her old habits. The Buffy series has been in the news a lot lately and a comic like this can remind fans of the Buffyverse that it is bigger than one person. “Five by five”.

Marvel Comics: Cooking with Deadpool from Insight Editions

“Over 60 recipies from the merc with a mouth!” Chimichangas for sure. Deadpool himself wrote down his favorite meals and even invited some of his friends, like Spider-Man, to put some dishes in here too. Warning, some of the recipes require “maximum effort”.

Batman/Catwoman #3 from DC Comics

Do you know who that is on the cover? Do you know who that is?! If you loved Batman: The Animated Series than chances are you also watched arguably the greatest Batman movie ever, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. An amazing character, created just for the movie, that then… no one did anything with. Until now! Tom King has brought Phantasm into DC Comics and I’m debating this book for that cover alone.

That’s all the retro picks I found for this month but I have my own weekly pull list at my local comic shop. And I keep finding more and more books I want every time I set foot inside. The King in Black event from Marvel has been great and Image just released Radiant Black which has potential to be an awesome new series. Check out your own local store and let me know what you picked up.
