Recurrent Events returns to give you the scoop on all the retro pop culture headlines from last week. Our Recurrent Events segment on this week’s podcast features some talk about the new Peacock app from NBC which will be available this Spring. Look for a feature story coming soon on the website with all of the retro content planned for the streaming service like new Saved By the Bell and Punky Brewster shows.
And speaking of Peacock, the big story this week is the potential return of one my favorite NBC shows. According to /Film, NBC is looking into reviving Quantum Leap to go with the other retro-centric shows already in its lineup. There is no word yet if this new series would somehow continue the story or just reboot the series. Either way, I’m very excited at the possibility of its return. While discussing on the podcast, I reveal that I probably learned more history watching the 1989-93 series than in school. It led to a wonderful discussion with Mickey about what other TV shows could fit that mold. Square One TV for math, Bill Nye for science, etc. I think it’s enough of an idea for a future article right here on The Retro Network.
Here are the rest of the Recurrent Events headlines for the week of Jan 12 – 18, 2020. (Stories marked with *** are discussed on TRN Podcast this week.)
TV/STREAMING
- ‘Punky Brewster’ Sequel Gets Series Order At Peacock – I didn’t watch alot of Punky Brewster as a kid, but I’m anxious to see what they do with the new series.
- ***HBO Max is Developing an Animated Aquaman Series – 3 episodes? What’s the point?
- ‘Friends’ Reunion Special A “Maybe” On HBO Max As Parties Can’t Reach Agreement – Bottom line is if you are HBO Max and want a huge push in subscribers, you get this deal done now and at any cost.
- No ThunderCats Series Has TRULY Been Good – Here’s Why – Still have yet to press play. Glad it was made, but probably not gonna care for the animation style.
- ‘Superman and Lois,’ ‘Walker, Texas Ranger’ Reboot Ordered to Series at CW – We mentioned the Walker reboot a couple months ago. I’m excited to see how it’s gonna turn out.
- ***CBS All Access is Rebooting Classic Kids Shows including Mr Magoo, Lassie, and George of the Jungle
MOVIES
- Mortal Kombat Animated Movie in the Works With Joel McHale, Jennifer Carpenter – Very interesting, especially with the live-action film moving forward. Major boost for the franchise.
- ‘Bad Boys 4’ In Works With Chris Bremner Aboard To Write – I’ve seen mainly good critical reviews for #3. 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes so makes sense to do another one.
- ***A Script for National Treasure 3 Is Reportedly in the Works – First was great and the second wasn’t bad. I hope this happens even if it is just a Disney+ release.
- Ghostbusters Reboot’s Director Is Hoping for a Crossover Film – Only if we get a live-action/animated film and include The Real Ghostbusters and Filmation Ghostbusters.
- ‘Broadway Vacation’: The Griswolds Get A Stage Musical – You know how much I love the Griswolds and I’d buy a ticket to this in a heartbeat.
FOOD
- ***SPOTTED: Rotisserie Chicken Pringles – Was anxious to get Mickey’s opinion. I think we’ll be seeking these out if they come to our local stores.
- ***Snoop Dogg-Inspired Glazed Donut Beyond Meat Breakfast Sandwich Available at Dunkin’ Through January 19, 2020 – Oooookay. Obviously this is past the date but they’ll have the regular sandwiches with Beyond Meat if you dare to try.
- Doritos Cool Ranch now with More Cool Ranch Flavor – Wonder if we can expect a Jay Leno Superbowl commercial this year.
COMICS
- TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: URBAN LEGENDS Unveils its Long-Lost Comic Book Finale
- Original Version of ALIEN Coming Soon as a Comic Book Series – I’m not much of a fan of the Alien franchise, but a comic series is well deserved.
TOYS/PRODUCTS
- Garbage Pail Kids Monopoly Is Coming – YESSS! So my guess is Adam Bomb as Boardwalk and Leaky Lindsay or New Wave Dave as Park Place. I just hope my namesake Jason Basin makes the board.
- G.I. Joe Classified 6 Inch Action Figure Line – Still unconfirmed but would love to see it happen. Makes sense it would be this year.
MUSIC
- ***Doobie Brothers, NIN, T-Rex and Depeche Mode Inducted Into Rock Hall – These choice were a hot topic on the podcast. My biggest qualm is the fan vote doesn’t seem to mean jack squat.
- ***Run-DMC to join Aerosmith for Grammys performance – This mashup back in the ’80s pretty much introduced me to rap. I haven’t watched the Grammys in years and probably will watch this performance the day after.
- Bon Jovi Announce New Tour With Bryan Adams
- Pearl Jam Announce New ‘Gigaton’ Album and Tour
- Foreigner Announce ‘Juke Box Heroes’ Tour With Kansas and Europe
VIDEO GAMES
- Japan’s Super Nintendo World is a ‘life-size, living video game’ – If they added this park to Univseral Studios in the US, I’d plan a family vacation around it.
