1984 memories
HBO wins again. They were great for showing these sex comedies.
I liked this movie as a kid. For the obvious reasons and for the humor. It’s dumb slapstick humor. It usually ages pretty well.
About all I recall from the movie is a wild party with funny gags and Tawny Kitaen. RIP
Let’s see how it holds up today.
40th Anniversary Re-watch
It’s still pretty funny. It’s extremely childish but it embraces it and never lets go.
Their were several laugh out load moments that most would find funny today. There are a couple of jokes I thought were great but younger, more sensitive types might be offended.
The plot is pretty simple. Rick (Tom Hanks) is getting married to Debbie (Tawny Kitaen) and his friends throw him a wild bachelor party.
The party is about as wild as can be. There are hookers, drugs, a band, a donkey and so much more. The donkey snorting all the drugs was pretty funny. The guy crying that he killed the donkey was even funnier.
Of course Debbie doesn’t trust Rick and wants to spy on him. But before she can make it to the she and her girlfriends go to a male strip club. This is one part I remember and thought it was from Mr. Mom. It features Nick the…, well you get the idea. I could have sworn he was in Mr. Mom. The crazy part is, how many movies have male strip clubs in them from the 80s??
Debbie and her girls dress up like hookers to infiltrate the bachelor party and end up in a hotel room filled with Japanese businessmen. They escape by the selfless sacrifice of one of Debbie’s friends. Which is another funny scene.
The movie knows what it is, a mindless fun time. It’s the same as the other comedies on the list, Up the Creek, Hot Dog…The Movie and more. Bachelor Party is a great comedy and with a great comedy scenes. The comedy is timeless and holds up nicely.
I also enjoyed seeing all the 80s fashion. The scenes with Tawny Kitaen and her girls are great, the big hair and the 80s outfits brought back lots of memories.
Rick tells a joke about a jam sandwich when he is at Debbie’s parents. I found it funny, it’s the same joke my dad’s been telling since forever.
Favorite Line:
Let’s have a bachelor party with chicks and guns and fire trucks and hookers and drugs and booze!
I enjoyed seeing Michael Dudikoff in this movie too. He was good at comedy. I only remember him from his action movies like the American Ninja series and Platoon Leader.
Bachelor Party is a fun comedy that never takes itself serious. Tom Hanks is a little over the top but it works for this movie. It’s worth watching if you like mindless, sophomoric humor. Oh and it has Tawny Kitaen.
Bachelor Party hit theaters on 29 June 1984. It was a big hit making over $38 million on a $7 million budget.

I am proud–proud, I say!–to own this movie on VHS. I was lucky enough to find it at a yard sale or thrift store, I don’t remember. I’ve been thinking of it lately, but I didn’t realize the 40th anniversary was coming up! I’ll have to give it a watch in its honor.
