What Are the Themes of This Year’s Simpson’s Treehouse of Horror Special?

The Halloween season is almost here, and The Simpsons is celebrating with a new Treehouse of Horror that leans into classic horror nostalgia. Season 38 premieres on Sept. 27, and this year’s Treehouse of Horror XXXVII arrives Oct. 25 with a lineup packed with retro inspired scares and familiar favorites.

Executive producer Matt Selman revealed that the episode will open with a special sequence animated by Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, the team behind Robot Chicken. The intro is a full mashup with The Nightmare Before Christmas, complete with Simpsons versions of Jack Skellington and the rest of the Halloween Town cast. It is a crossover that feels tailor made for fans who grew up watching both properties.

Treehouse of Horror XXXVII features three segments, each pulling from classic horror stories and beloved genre staples. The first is inspired by the British novel The Husband and imagines Homer stepping out of the shed as different versions of himself. Marge finds herself in alternate realities married to characters like Lenny and even Kang and Kodos. Tiffany Haddish guest stars as Marge’s best friend in one of the timelines.

The second segment blends Stephen King’s Pet Sematary with the body swapping chaos of Freaky Friday. Homer accidentally kills Bart and Santa’s Little Helper, buries them, and watches them return with their bodies switched. It is a throwback to the long tradition of Treehouse of Horror segments spoofing iconic horror films.

The final story takes a darker turn. Homer has mysteriously vanished, and teenage Bart and Lisa discover that witch versions of Patty and Selma have trapped him inside endless murderous Driver’s Ed films. It is a mix of surreal humor and retro horror flavor that fits right into the show’s seasonal legacy.

Treehouse of Horror has always been a celebration of the movies and monsters fans grew up with. This year’s episode continues that tradition with fresh animation, classic horror references, and a lineup that feels built for viewers who love revisiting the spooky favorites of decades past.
