Story Kitchen, a media company specializing in adapting video games and other non-traditional intellectual properties into film and television, has partnered with Toys”R”Us Studios to develop a live action movie.
Wait, Toys”R”Us Studios? Did you know Toys”R”Us had a studio division? I sure didn’t. I was under the impression Toys”R”Us went bankrupt and closed all their stores. I know they don’t have any stores in my area.
Toys”R”Us is a cultural touchstone that continues impacting the child in all of us today. As ‘80s kids who considered Toys”R”Us one of the most magical places on Earth, we’re honored to partner to create a film that will capture the spirit of adventure, creativity and nostalgia that Toys”R”Us represents.

Children of the 80s grew up with Toys”R”Us and Geoffrey the Giraffe. Sadly, I wasn’t one of those kids. The closet Toys”R”Us to my hometown was over 120 miles away, there was no way my parents would drive that far for a toy store. Not we we had a perfectly good K-Mart in town… I was in my early 20s the first time I stepped into a Toys”R”Us store.
This early in development there isn’t much information on the movie. All we know is it will “capture that childhood wonder in a modern, fast-paced adventure that taps into the Toys“R”Us brand’s relevance.”
It will be a journey as boundless as play itself, evoking the electric sense of wonder that is the essence of Toys”R”Us. This story will capture the imagination, adventure and joy that has made Toys”R”Us a destination for kids of all ages.
~Kim Miller Olko, president of Toys”R”Us Studios.
The project is considered to be akin to Night at the Museum or Jumanji. The movie concept is still in the early phases, no director or casting announcements are available.
Story Kitchen is best known for adapting video games into feature films and was instrumental in bringing Sonic the Hedgehog to theaters in 2020. Other notable projects include the Tomb Raider animated series, a live action Tomb Raider series and are developing a Just Cause movie based on the video game.
With the success of Jumanji and other movies I’m interested to what they do with a Toys“R”Us movie.
Keep an eye out for future announcements on the upcoming Toys”R”Us movie.
Okay, I was skeptical at the headline, but reading this… I’m actually kinda into it.
