Thursday Threesome #1: Madonna, Heart, and Cyndi Lauper

In lieu of Music Mondays for the month of August, we have a new feature: the Thursday Threesome! We’ll present three songs that are seemingly unrelated, let you watch/listen to the videos THEN reveal how they’re related. Let’s get started!

#1 Madonna “Like a Virgin”

#2 Heart “Alone”

#3 Cyndi Lauper “True Colors”

Think you know the connection?

Here we go…

This week’s songs were all written by the song writing team of Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg. The two met at a party in 1981 and began writing songs together soon after with Kelly writing the music and Steinberg writing the lyrics. In addition to these songs, the duo also wrote “So Emotional” for Whitney Houston and co-wrote songs with The Bangles, The Pretenders and Pat Benatar. They were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2011 and while Steinberg remains active in music, Tom Kelly lost his enthusiasm for songwriting in the mid-90’s and went into semi-retirement.

  • All three songs spent time at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100
  • For “Like A Virgin”, read a great behind-the-song article here
  • Kelly and Steinberg’s band, i-Ten, recorded a version of the Heart hit “Alone” that can be found on Spotify and here. While it’s not a bad version of the song, the Heart version packs more of a punch thanks to the vocals of Ann Wilson.
  • “True Colors” was originally presented to country star Anne Murray who turned it down.
