There is something truly nostalgic about the old-school vintage fun that classic video games provided. They were simple in aesthetic and gameplay; but the mechanics behind them were something out of this world. They were the foundation for what would become one of the greatest entertainment markets in the world.
The Triumph of Vintage Entertainment
Gamers today are looking for ever growing complexity from their titles. Yet many of them return to classic SNES games like Super Mario Bros and Castlevania. But it isn’t just classic vintage games that have a lasting appeal. Gaming goes further back than the invention of video games. The first casino was established in the 17th century.
Those casino games have had a profound influence on the gaming market; and continue to do so to this day. Games like Balatro would not be possible without people familiarity and passion for poker after all. The same can be said for the countless games that feature digital roulette options. But if we were to narrow it down to classic video games; then the question is as follows. What makes Vintage games so much fun?
What Makes Vintage Gaming Fun
There are several factors that elevate the success of classic vintage games. The first is simply the nostalgic element of the gaming market. A lot of the most successful gamers today likely grew up with an SNES or a Sega Genesis. Perhaps some of them owned a PSX or the original Xbox. All of these consoles were famous for setting up some of the most formative games in the industry; with Nintendo being the system that started it all.
Even if you’ve never played a Super Mario game as a kid; you will likely experience a surge of nostalgia upon witnessing the multi-color opening screen. The simplistic charm of it all is so ingrained in our culture that it is impossible not to feel an attachment to it as a gamer. But not all of us are subjects to nostalgia. Yet even those with no emotional connection to these classic games find themselves returning to the titles years later. What could the reason for that be?
Modern gamers may find that old-school games were simple in appearance and story only. The gameplay and mechanics behind these title were anything but easy. Many of the retro titles are considered to be among the most difficult games in the medium’s history. Titles like Ghosts n’ Goblins and Rogue still serve as ultimate challenges for people who find Cuphead or Dark Souls just a tad too easy. The challenge that these old-school games can provide is nothing like what you will experience from modern gaming.
The Influence of Retro Titles
Many may view vintage gaming as a relic of the past. But the influence of these games still exists today. To prove that we need look no further than the “Metroidvania” genre. Long-time gamers will instantly recognize the word as a portmanteau of Metroid and Castlevania; two classic games that are well-known for their difficulty. But what sets these two apart from standard action platformers is the ability of the player to retrace their steps and uncover new hidden locations after uncovering special items.
The Metroidvania genre is huge in the indie game development scene today. The Spanish studio The Game Kitchen came out with two of the most iconic and gorgeous Metroidvania titles in the past ten years. Blasphemous 1 and 2 follow the story of The Penitent One; a fallen paladin who is now fighting against the corrupt forces of a dying god. The game incorporates the gothic elements that made the original Castlevania games so iconic; and continue to thrill audiences to this day.
JRPGs were also incredibly influential on the modern gaming industry. We all remember titles like Final Fantasy and Fire Emblem. But few talk about how these games influenced writing and game design today. Already many gamers have made up their mind about game of the year in 2025; claiming that it will be tough to surpass Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. But it is a question whether the turn-based roleplaying game would have been possible without the aforementioned titles that paved its way.
Influence Beyond Gaming
Believe it or not, retro games have a pretty huge influence beyond the gaming sphere. It wouldn’t be unfair to say that they’ve had a huge impact on the complicated but beloved comic book industry. Marvel and DC have adapted plenty of noteworthy video game titles into comics. Independent comic book publishers have also done their part in collaborating with big brands to release some excellent titles. The Udon comics Street Fighter franchise comes to mind as an example of a video game adaptation being done right.
Music has not been left unaffected by retro video games. Any gamer will tell you that the original soundtrack backing their favorite title plays a big role in why they enjoy the game in question. It is difficult to imagine a franchise like Devil May Cry without the fast-paced battle tunes that accompany Dante as he is carving a bloody path through demonic corpses. It is just as difficult to imagine Pac-Man without the iconic “waka waka” sound and the simple track that invokes a wave of nostalgia in all of us.
Music may play a big part in gaming. But gaming also plays a big role in music. Bands like Powerglove and the emerging synth wave sound are clearly inspired by old-school 8-Bit gaming titles. YouTube is also chalk full of metal and rock musicians who do their own interpretations on video game soundtracks from the 80s and 90s. Who doesn’t get excited when they see the latest heavy metal cover of Bloody Tears from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night?
In Closing
There is something special about vintage games. A charm that goes beyond simple nostalgia. These old-school titles were able to challenge children and adults alike. Without their influence the modern gaming market would be a shell of what it is today. It is no wonder that a lot of casual and professional gamers continue to return to these titles even decades later.
