For years, fans have begged for MTV to go back to a music video format. Well, dust off your air guitars and crank up the volume, because for one glorious week this September, MTV is going back to its roots.
In the lead-up to the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards, the network will air 24/7 music videos across MTV2, MTV Live, and MTV Classic, starting September 1. Itโs being billed as a revival of the channelโs โearly DNA,โ a nod to the days when Video Killed the Radio Star launched a revolution on August 1, 1981.
The week will feature a curated mix of classic and current videos, handpicked by legendary MTV personalities and past VMA winners. Each guest curator will spotlight their seven favorite music videos of all time, offering fans a personal look at the songs and visuals that shaped their lives.
For Gen Xers and millennials who remember when MTV was the epicenter of pop culture, and for younger fans curious about what all the fuss was about, this weeklong throwback is a rare chance to relive the magic. Itโs not a permanent return to the old format, but for seven days, itโs Total Request Nostalgia.
The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards will air live on CBS from UBS Arena in New York on Sunday, September 7, from 8โ11 p.m. ET. The show will also stream on Paramount+ and simulcast on MTV, with a one-hour live pre-show airing across Paramount Media Networks.

Doggone it. They shut down MTV here at the end of last year. =(
