For many Generation X kids and early millennials, a trip to McDonald’s came with one unforgettable treat. The fried apple pie. It had a shatter crisp crust, a bubbling cinnamon apple filling, and a reputation for scorching the tongues of anyone who took a bite too soon. Once it cooled just enough to keep the crunch without the burn, it became one of the most satisfying fast food desserts of its era.
The reason it tasted so different from today’s version was simple. The pies were fried, not baked.
McDonald’s is bringing back that original recipe to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary. According to food blogger Snackolator, the classic fried pies will return nationwide on June 22. McDonald’s has already added the item to its website, confirming the comeback.
Fans of the original pies remember the blistered, golden crust and the intense heat of the filling when they came straight from the fryer. Many joked that you needed leftover ice from your drink just to survive the first bite. The texture and flavor were unlike anything that came after the switch to baked pies.
McDonald’s moved from fried to baked apple pies in September 1992 as part of a broader effort to offer menu items that were considered healthier at the time.
The return of the fried apple pie gives longtime fans a chance to revisit a small but powerful piece of fast food history, and for many, a taste of childhood that never quite faded.
