DTV Monster Hits: When Rock & Roll and Disney Came Together To Make Halloween Magic

In the golden age of TV specials, when Halloween was more about mood than merchandise, Disney delivered a rock-infused treat that still haunts the memories of fans who caught it live: DTV Monster Hits. Originally airing on NBC on October 30, 1987, this half-hour special was a mashup of spooky vibes, pop music, and vintage Disney animation…a kind of haunted MTV for the Saturday morning crowd.

Before YouTube mashups and TikTok edits, Disney had DTV…a clever play on MTV that paired hit songs with classic animated clips. The concept was simple but brilliant: take beloved Disney shorts and sync them to popular music, creating a new kind of music video that felt both nostalgic and fresh. DTV Monster Hits took that formula and gave it a Halloween twist.

The special featured a killer lineup of Halloween-friendly tracks, including:

  • โ€œThrillerโ€ by Michael Jackson, paired with dancing skeletons and ghostly gags
  • โ€œGhostbustersโ€ by Ray Parker Jr., with Slimer-style antics and animated chaos
  • โ€œSuperstitionโ€ by Stevie Wonder, set to eerie visuals and magical mischief
  • โ€œBad Moon Risingโ€ by Creedence Clearwater Revival, with werewolves and moonlit madness
  • โ€œEvil Womanโ€ by ELO, matched with wicked witches and spellbound scenes

Each song was reimagined through the lens of Disneyโ€™s animation vault, breathing new life into old shorts while giving kids a taste of pop cultureโ€™s darker side.

Narration came courtesy of the Magic Mirror (voiced by Jeffrey Jones), who guided viewers through the musical mayhem with a mix of spooky wisdom and theatrical flair. Witch Hazel (voiced by June Foray) also made an appearance, adding a dash of classic cartoon cackling to the mix. Gary Owens, known for his booming voice work, served as the announcer, giving the whole production a polished, Saturday-night-on-the-couch feel.

Despite its charm, DTV Monster Hits didnโ€™t become an annual tradition like Itโ€™s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. It aired only once on network television, making it a rare treat for those who remember it. Today, it lives on through fan restorations and digital archives, cherished by those who grew up in the era of VHS tapes and Halloween specials that felt like events.

DTV Monster Hits is more than a forgotten broadcast, itโ€™s a time capsule of โ€™80s Halloween, when Disney dared to mix ghouls with grooves and animation with attitude. If youโ€™re building a retro Halloween tribute or curating a playlist of spooky nostalgia, this special deserves a spot in the haunted hall of fame.

And though the power of the internet, we’re able to present the original special in all it’s glory! Check it out below as part of your Halloween season this year.
