Penguin Random House Announces Massive Dungeons & Dragons Encyclopedia for 2026

Penguin Random House is leveling up its long-running partnership with Dungeons & Dragons by releasing a full-scale Dungeons & Dragons Encyclopedia, a 320‑page hardcover arriving October 20, 2026.

The upcoming volume pulls together decades of lore from across the game’s multiverse, covering more than half a dozen legendary campaign settings—Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Spelljammer, Ravenloft, Greyhawk, and others—along with entries on monsters, iconic locations, heroes, villains, artifacts, and the deep-cut ephemera longtime fans love.

To tackle a project this sprawling, Penguin assembled a party of heavy hitters:

  • Matt Forbeck – veteran game designer with credits at TSR and Wizards of the Coast
  • Michael Witwer – author of multiple D&D art books and a biography of Gary Gygax
  • Jon Peterson – widely regarded as one of the foremost historians of D&D
  • Kalysta Harmon – researcher and collaborator on D&D art history projects
  • Jessica Lee Patterson – art historian who previously partnered with Peterson on a D&D exhibition

Penguin Random House has been publishing licensed D&D titles for years, but this encyclopedia looks to be one of its most ambitious efforts—part lore compendium, part art showcase, and part historical archive for the world’s most influential tabletop RPG.

The Dungeons & Dragons Encyclopedia will retail for $60 when it hits shelves this fall, and is available for pre-order on Amazon now.
