The Muppets are officially heading back to primetime. ABC and Disney+ have announced a new Muppet Show special set to premiere February 4, marking the iconic franchise’s return to television just in time for its 50th anniversary.
Produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey Pictures, the special will feature pop star and Coachella headliner Sabrina Carpenter as the guest star, joining Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo, and the rest of the classic Muppet troupe back on the stage of the original Muppet Theatre.
According to the official description, the event promises “music, comedy, and a whole lot of chaos” as the Muppets revive their signature variety‑show format with Carpenter at the center of the action.
The special will air simultaneously on ABC and Disney+, giving fans multiple ways to tune in. Viewers can also revisit the entire original five‑season run of The Muppet Show, which aired from 1976 to 1981, now streaming on Disney+.
Veteran Muppet performers Bill Barretta, Dave Goelz, Eric Jacobson, Peter Linz, David Rudman, and Matt Vogel will reprise their roles, supported by a full team of puppeteers. The special is written by Albertina Rizzo and directed by Alex Timbers, who will also serve as executive producers alongside Carpenter, Rogen, Goldberg, and others from Point Grey Pictures and The Muppets Studio.
Industry reports suggest the project may serve as a backdoor pilot for a potential new Muppet series on Disney+.
