A Goonies Sequel Is Now Officially In the Works

After a decade of speculation and failed attempts, Warner Bros. announced on Feb. 14, 2025 that a Goonies sequel is in production with Steven Spielberg producing. Screenwriter Potsy Ponciroli has been tapped to write the script, and Steven Spielberg and his Amblin Entertainment group, alongside Chris Columbus, who wrote the original movie 40 years ago, are set to produce.

The news is even more timely, as several cast members from the iconic 1985 film reunited for the first time in 40 years (aside from a virtual reunion in 2020). Corey Feldman, Josh Brolin, Kerri Green, Jeff Cohen and Chris Columbus came together to support Key Huy Quan and Sean Astin for the premiere of their new film Love Hurts as well as Quan’s hand-and-footprint ceremony at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

It was the first time The Goonies cast got back together in decades, so naturally, fans wondered if a sequel could be in the works. At the time, Quan shared, “It’s one of the most asked questions in my life. I would love for it to happen.”

Feldman revealed that roughly a decade ago, he and his costar Astin were working on an idea, and even pitched it to Goonies director Richard Donner and members of Amblin and Columbus production teams. Although it was intriguing, Donner admitted that he thought it was all “too expensive” at the time.

It looks like that has changed and the sequel will finally happen.
