Hasbro is teaming up with Fathom Entertainment to bring The Transformers: The Movie back to theaters for its 40th anniversary, giving fans a chance to relive the action, the music, and the emotional punch that defined a generation. The rerelease is part of Hasbroโs yearโlong โApology Tour,โ a tongueโinโcheek acknowledgment of the lasting impact of Optimus Primeโs death, one of the most talkedโabout moments in franchise history.
Beginning September 17, 2026, the 1986 animated classic will return to U.S. theaters in a newly remastered 4K presentation, with screenings running through September 21 as a limitedโrun cinema event. Select international markets are expected to launch dayโandโdate with the U.S., making this a global celebration of the filmโs legacy.
Hasbroโs Alyse DโAntuono, Vice President of Global Brand & Franchise Strategy for Action Brands, emphasized the filmโs enduring cultural footprint, noting that fans have carried this story with them for decades. Fathom CEO Ray Nutt echoed the sentiment, calling the movie one of the most lasting and defining animated features across generations.

Originally released in 1986, the film marked the franchiseโs first leap to the big screen and shocked audiences with its darker tone, higher stakes, and the introduction of major lore elements like the Autobot Matrix of Leadership and the planetโdevouring Unicron. The fall of Optimus Prime in his final battle with Megatron remains one of the most controversial and emotional moments in the brandโs history, a turning point that left many young fans stunned.
The filmโs iconic voice cast returns in this anniversary release, including Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, Frank Welker as Megatron, Judd Nelson as Hot Rod and Rodimus Prime, Leonard Nimoy as Galvatron, Eric Idle as WreckโGar, Robert Stack as Ultra Magnus, and Orson Welles in his final role as Unicron.
Tickets for the 40th anniversary screenings will go on sale later this summer through Fathom Entertainment and participating theater box offices. Fans can also expect additional anniversary surprises across toys, merchandise, publishing, and more as Hasbro continues its โApology Tourโ throughout the year.
