In a move that has longtime MOTU fans buzzing, Mattel is relaunching the iconic Fright Zone playset, first released in 1985. The updated version of the playset will be available starting July 1, 2025, through specialty retailers and Mattel Creations.
The Fright Zone was originally introduced as the sinister lair of Hordak, leader of the Evil Horde and She-Ra’s archnemesis, and was one of the more memorable playsets of the 1980s. Known for its eerie tree, puppet dragon, and dungeon-like design, it offered a darker, more mysterious alternative to Castle Grayskull and Snake Mountain.
The 2025 relaunch, part of the Masters of the Universe: Origins line, stays true to the original’s spirit while adding modern enhancements. The set includes:
- A rotating tree that reveals Hordak’s throne
- A Dreadful Dragon creature, a reimagined version of the original puppet
- Tube traps, a rock monster trap, and a flip-down prison cell
- A secret entrance, armory wall, and modular panels for display versatility
- Compatibility with 5.5-inch MOTU Origins figures
The Fright Zone playset will be available for pre-order starting July 1, 2025, at 9:00 AM PT, exclusively for Club Grayskull members on the Mattel Creations website. The pre-order window runs through July 15, 2025, and the set may also appear at select specialty retailers during that time. The MSRP is $92, and it’s recommended for ages 6 and up.
The relaunch of the Fright Zone is timed to build momentum for the upcoming Masters of the Universe film, which is expected to reintroduce He-Man, Skeletor, and Hordak to a new generation. With the 40th anniversary of She-Ra and the continued popularity of Masters of the Universe, Mattel’s move taps into both nostalgia and renewed fan interest.
I had the original when I was a kid, and while a cool playset, it was kind of lacking as a Horde “base,” the way Castle Grayskull or Snake Mountain were for their respective factions.
Still, neat to see it being revived.
