Miami Vice started as a gritty TV series starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. They portrayed James “Sonny” Crockett (Johnson) and Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs (Thomas), two undercover police detectives in Miami.
The series ran for five season from 1984 until 1990 on NBC. It was a huge hit and had a significant impact on 80s pop culture. Fashion, five o’clock shadows, fast cars and Ray Ban sunglasses; everyone wanted to be like Crockett and Tubbs. Who didn’t want a pet alligator?
In 2006 Michael Mann directed a Miami Vice movie starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx. At the time it was a mild success getting mixed reviews from critics and fans. Over the last 20 years it has received better reviews and has become somewhat of a cult classic.

There’s now good news on the horizon for Miami Vice fans.
It’s now confirmed Joseph Kosinski is attached to direct an upcoming Miami Vice movie reboot. Kosinski may be best known for directing the $1.5 billion mega-hit Top Gun: Maverick. He also directed Tron: Legacy (2010), Obilvion (2013) among others and created the story for Twisters (2024).
Kosinski’s latest movie F1 stars Brad Pitt playing a retired Formula One driver who comes out of retirement to mentor a rookie. By all accounts F1 looks like a great movie.
Eric Warren Singer wrote the initial draft for Miami Vice but is no longer attached to the project due to other obligations. Singer previously wrote the screenplay for Top Gun: Maverick, Only the Brave and American Hustle.
The new writer attached to Miami Vice is Dan Gilroy who wrote Two for the Money (2005), The Bourne Legacy (2012), Nightcrawler (2014) and several episodes to Andor.
Miami Vice is in pre-production but it’s unclear when filming will start. Kosinski’s next project is a UFO conspiracy thriller for Apple.
Unfortunately there are no other casting or filming details. Stay tuned for more.
