A new live action adaptation of Jem and the Holograms is officially in development, according to an exclusive report from Deadline. The project is being developed as a television series with Amazon MGM Studios, the same studio that released Masters of the Universe in theaters last week.
The series will be produced by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolanโs Kilter Films in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment. Joy, Nolan, and Athena Wickham will serve as executive producers alongside Gabriel Marano for Hasbro Entertainment.
Kilter Films continues to expand its genre portfolio. The company produces the live action Fallout series, which aired its second season this year, with a third season already greenlit for next year. Joy and Nolan also co created Westworld, which ran on HBO from 2016 through 2022. Kilter is additionally overseeing the upcoming adaptation of Fourth Wing.
The original Jem and the Holograms animated series debuted in 1985 and ran for three seasons, remaining a fixture in syndication throughout the 1990s. The show followed Jerrica Benton, a record company owner who performed as her alter ego, Jem, alongside her band, The Holograms. It became a Saturday morning favorite for kids in the eighties and nineties and was produced by Hasbro, Sunbow Productions, and Marvel Productions, with animation by Toei Animation. A live action film adaptation, directed by John M. Chu, was released in 2015.
Interest in the brand has grown in recent years. The Loyal Subjects has released a series of Jem themed dolls, including exclusives at last yearโs San Diego Comic Con. Hasbro has also committed to producing additional toys and collectibles tied to the franchise. JemCon, the long running fan convention dedicated to the property, is celebrating its twentieth year.
