Ace Frehley, Founding Guitarist of KISS and Rock Icon, Dead at 74

Paul Daniel “Ace” Frehley, the legendary guitarist and founding member of KISS, died peacefully on October 16, 2025, in Morristown, New Jersey. He was 74 years old. Known to millions as “The Spaceman,” Frehley helped launch one of the most iconic rock bands in history, captivating audiences with his explosive guitar solos, signature silver makeup, and electrifying stage presence.

Born on April 27, 1951, in New York City, Frehley joined KISS in 1973 and quickly became a driving force behind the band’s success. His raw, melodic playing helped define the group’s sound on classic albums like KISS, Destroyer, and Love Gun. He famously designed his own persona, complete with space-themed costumes and a smoking guitar, which became a staple of the band’s theatrical live shows. Frehley left KISS in 1982 to pursue a solo career, forming Frehley’s Comet and releasing hits like “New York Groove,” which became a fan favorite and chart success.

Frehley rejoined KISS in 1996 for their highly anticipated reunion tour, donning the Spaceman makeup once again and thrilling longtime fans. He continued to perform and record music into his seventies, remaining a beloved figure in the rock world. His influence extended far beyond KISS, inspiring generations of guitarists with his distinctive tone and fearless style.

His family released a heartfelt statement following his passing: “We are completely devastated and heartbroken. In his last moments, we were fortunate enough to have been able to surround him with loving, caring, peaceful words, thoughts, prayers and intentions as he left this earth. We cherish all of his finest memories, his laughter, and celebrate his strengths and kindness that he bestowed upon others. The magnitude of his passing is of epic proportions, and beyond comprehension. Reflecting on all of his incredible life achievements, Ace’s memory will continue to live on forever”.

Ace Frehley’s legacy is etched into the annals of rock history. He was more than a guitarist, he was a pioneer, a showman, and a symbol of rock’s wild, unrelenting spirit. He is survived by his family, countless fans, and a body of work that will continue to echo through amplifiers and arenas for years to come.
