Lucasfilm has confirmed that the original Star Wars is returning to theaters for its 50th anniversary. The 1977 classic will screen in select IMAX 70 mm locations beginning February 19, 2027, giving longtime fans a rare chance to see the film in its original, unaltered form on the biggest screens available. Lucasfilm says the rerelease will also play in additional theaters for a limited engagement.
The IMAX celebration doesn’t stop there. Lucasfilm also reconfirmed that Star Wars: Starfighter, the upcoming stand‑alone adventure directed by Shawn Levy, will debut in IMAX on May 28, 2027. The film was shot with IMAX‑certified cameras and will receive 70 mm film prints for select locations. Ryan Gosling stars as Kade Auberon, a rogue pilot pulled into a dangerous galactic mission, alongside Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, Flynn Gray, and Amy Adams.
The return of the original Star Wars is especially notable because it will screen without the later edits, CGI additions, or Special Edition changes that have defined most modern releases. Fans have spent decades relying on VHS tapes, Laserdiscs, or fan restorations to revisit the unaltered version. A recent British Film Institute screening of an early print hinted that Lucasfilm was finally ready to acknowledge the film’s untouched history, complete with the original crawl before “A New Hope” was added.
With IMAX confirming the 2027 date, fans will soon have the chance to experience the film as audiences did in 1977. Tickets are expected to be in high demand once they go on sale, marking a milestone moment for moviegoers who have waited decades to see the original version return to theaters.
