Ugly Christmas Sweaters have been around since the 1950s. They gained popularity in the 1980s when they started appearing on TV shows and in movies. Even Clark Griswold wore an ugly sweater in Christmas Vacation.

The ugly sweater faded away in the 1990s but saw a resurgence in the early 2000s. Bridget Jones’ Diary (2001) is arguable the movie responsible for reviving the ugly sweaters in pop culture. In the movie Mark Darcy wears an Ugly Christmas reindeer sweater.

The first recorded Ugly Christmas Sweater party took place in 2002, in Vancouver, British Columbia. In 2011 a group of Ugly Christmas Sweater lovers decided to make the third Friday of December Ugly Christmas Sweater day. Since then it’s became an unofficial holiday. This year National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day lands on 20 December.

I own a couple of Ugly Christmas sweaters and added a new on to my wardrobe this year, all are from Fun.com. I also own a couple of ugly button down shirts. I’m ready for any occasion.

Below are ten awesome retro Ugly Christmas Sweaters for your holiday festivities this year.

Fraggle Rock

Ugly Christmas Sweater Fraggle Rock

Who doesn’t lover Fraggle Rock? I know I do, I’ve been a fan since the first time I saw them on a scrambled, fuzzy HBO channel.

This sweater has all the major characters celebrating Christmas. Red Gobo, Mokey, Wembley and Boober are all gathered around the tree as Einstein and Junior Grog watches over them. The Dozers are busy delivering presents and candy canes.

    A Christmas Story

Ugly Christmas Sweater A Christmas Story

      Ohhhhhh fudge!

This sweater features iconic items from the movie. The pink bunny suit, the leg lamp and Mikey stuck to the pole. This would make a great conversation piece at any Holiday party.

      Care Bears

The Care Bears sweaters aren’t over festive but they are still great sweaters. They feature Tenderheart Bear and Grumpy Bear. My one Christmas wish for these sweaters is they were more Christmas-y

        Garfield

Garfield was always a part my Christmas. Either I or my sister would get one of the Garfield comic strip books for a gift, usually my sister. When the Garfield Christmas special aired Garfield and friends were a permanent part of the Christmas season.

This is a great cardigan sweater that will dress up any occasion.

          Lite Brite

          Ugly Christmas Sweater Lite Brite

Lite Brite was a big part of my childhood. Following the patterns to make amazing pictures, making my own pictures or making words, Lite Brite was always a fun time.

This sweater not only brings back the memories of the Lite Brite, it also lights up!

            Santa

            Ugly Christmas Sweater Santa

What’s Christmas without Santa? A nice simple Santa Christmas sweater.

              The Grinch

              Ugly Christmas Sweater Grinch

You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.

Another classic Christmas special that never gets old, at least not for me. The Grinch sweater features a great image of the Grinch and the lyrics to the song. This sweater is sure to be a hit.

                Gremlins

Isn’t Gizmo cute? Another simple sweater that features a great character from the 80s. Just be sure not to feed him after midnight.

                  Ghostbusters

This is the one I added this year. It’s a great Christmas sweater featuring the Ghostbusters. Well, actually the Ghostbusters aren’t on the sweater, just Slimer and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. I love this sweater.

                    Tom and Jerry

I always liked watching Tom and Jerry. It was a ridiculous cartoon that made me laugh and still does. Jerry is being his playful self taking a picture of Tom with a punching glove camera. Tom barely gets out of the way and hilarity ensues.

Best for Last – Christmas Vacation

Christmas Vacation helped kick start the Ugly Christmas Sweater craze in the 80s. This sweater celebrates the movie with the movie poster on the sweater. I (re)watch Christmas Vacation every year. It’s one of my favorite Christmas movies.
