Slade Wilson enlisted in the Army at 16 years old. He served in Korea and Vietnam, then was selected for a super solider program. In the program Wilson was injected with an experimental drug allowing him utilize over 90% of his brain giving him heightened senses, advanced healing, and super human strength.
During one mission Wilson defied orders and rescued his friend from a suicide mission. After the mission Wilson left the military and became a mercenary taking the name Deathstroke the Terminator.
Deathstroke the Terminator
Deathstroke first appeared in 1980 in The New Teen Titans #2. He is a supervillain and the archenemy of the Teen Titans. Over the years he’s been apart of the Secret Society of Super Villains, Suicide Squad and the League of Assassins.
After years of appearances in other comics, in 1991 Deathstroke finally got his own title. Deathstroke the Terminator had a decent run, 60 issues over 5 years. Issue #1 in August 1991 and the final issue #60 in June 1996.
Before you start making the obvious comparisons to Deadpool, remember Deathstroke did it first. Slade Wilson AKA Deathstroke, Wade Wilson AKA Deadpool, their personalities, costumes, fighting styles and superpowers are all similar.
Rob Liefeld totally ripped off Deathstroke when creating Deadpool!
Deathstroke did it first and did it better.
I could go on for days bashing Deadpool, but let’s move on and see what the ads look like in Deathstroke the Terminator #1.
Batman Sunday Classics
Did you know Batman was in the Sunday Paper? I had no idea.
I loved reading the Sunday comics when I was a kid. Having a weekly Batman comic would be awesome!
This ad is for a reprinting of the Batman Sunday comics from the 1940s. I never saw the book in my local comic store. I would have bought it.
Terminator 2 Trading Cards
This is a great ad! I don’t know how I missed these trading cards but I never owned a single pack. I may need to get on eBay and look for some.
Terminator 2 was a juggernaut of a movie in 1991. Funny story, my friend, Brian and I went to see the movie, he was 18, I wasn’t. Most of the time in my town no one cared if high school-ers went to rated ‘R’ movies. Well, no one who was selling the tickets cared because it was usually a friend from school.
The day we went to see the movie Brian decided to shave his head, bald. (not a good look for him) When he went to buy his ticket the girl, Heather asked him for some I.D. because he looked to young to get into an ‘R’ rated movie. He was mad but when she looked at his I.D. and said ‘you look better with hair’ he was enraged…and I was laughing.
I went up to buy my ticket and Heather gave me a big smile, the same smile she gave me everyday when we were in Economics class together. I said something about Brian’s bald head, she let out a giggly laugh and gave me my ticket. As we walked away she said ‘Maybe next week you’ll go to the movies with me.’ Well, maybe I will, maybe I will…
Anywho…..
This ad is excellent. The cards are made by Impel, who always put out quality work. They published the fantastic G.I. Joe cards that same year.
Justice League Breakdowns
I vaguely recall this crossover. When I looked through my collection for it I discovered I own the last five issues of the crossover. Why would I buy the last five issues and not the first ten? I have no excuse.
From what I recall the crossover had something to do with an assassination attempt and a big shakeup in the Justice League ranks. I’d go back and read the crossover but I only have the ending…
What was I thinking??
Deathstroke The Terminator
When you’re Deathstroke The Terminator, you demand an ad for Deathstroke The Terminator in the middle of your own comic!
Even Deadpool couldn’t pull that off!
Batman Full Circle
This one is a repeat from Hawk & Dove #25. But I think this ad is a better quality. Better paper quality, no bleed through from the previous page and good inking.
It’s an ad that stands out. I’d buy Batman Full Circle because of this ad!
Impact Comics
We saw this ad last week in the Legend of the Shield comic. I still like it.
It’s going to show up a lot in the next six months. DC was on a big push for their new Impact Comic imprint. Too bad the comics didn’t stick around longer.
Outlaws
Outlaws was an interesting take on the legend of Robin Hood. It takes place in a futuristic world where people are enslaved by an evil king.
A man called Hood raises up against the evil king, stealing from him and freeing the slaves. Hood had his own version of the merry men, although they weren’t so merry.
He was joined by a man named Redbird, a girl named Helion (no relation to TRN Hellions) who was a concubine of the local sheriff, an escaped slave named Little Jess and a couple others. Together they set out to take down the evil king.
Outlaws was a limited series running for eight issues. It’s a cool take on the Robin Hood tale. If you can find it, it’s worth reading the short series.
The only knock I have on this ad is the black and white art. It would be easier to read and see if it was in color. The comic was in color, not sure why the ad isn’t.
Tale From the Crypt
No question, best ad of the book!
I love Tales From The Crypt! We didn’t have HBO growing up. I was only able to watch the show when I was at a friends house. Thankfully HBO is good at playing shows over and over and over again.
During Season 4 I moved into an apartment complex with cable and HBO included in the rent and was able to watch Tales From The Crypt weekly. It became a regular Wednesday night show.
The ad has artwork akin to the original comic from the 1950s and of course the Crypt Keeper. I can still hear his cackling laugh as he introduces the next scary story.
Tales From The Crypt featured a who’s-who in Hollywood cast. Stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dan Aykroyd, Judd Nelson, Lea Thompson, Martin Sheen, Brad Pitt, Kirk Douglas, Michael J. Fox, Tom Hanks, Whoopi Goldberg and Ted Danson just to name a few.
I still own Demon Knight and Bordello of Blood on VHS, but neither on Blu-Ray. Not sure why, maybe I’m holding out for the 4K release.
This ad brings back all the great memories of watching Tales From the Crypt. I may need to watch it again this Halloween season.
That will end the look at ads from Deathstroke The Terminator. I hope you enjoyed them. Let us know in the comments which ad was your favorite?
I’m off to find the Terminator 2 trading cards on eBay, wish me luck.
Until next time, keep your comics bagged and boarded…unless you want to thumb through them to check out the great ads!
