Stranger Things Animated Series, new details revealed

Stranger Things: Tales of ’85 is the newly announced animated spin-off of the Netflix hit series, Stranger Things. During the Annecy Film Festival, Netflix revealed new details for Stranger Things: Tales of ’85.

The animated spin-off in the Stranger Things universe will be set in Hawkins during the winter of 1985, between seasons 2 and 3 of the live-action series. It also introduces a new character, Nikki, a tough, girl fighting “new monsters and unraveling a paranormal mystery terrorizing their town.”

The Duffer Brothers have confirmed the series is part of the official canon, aiming to deepen the characters’ backstories and fill narrative gaps in the live-action series. If Stranger Things: Tales of ’85 is canon it will be interesting to see how the handle the new character, Nikki, who isn’t a part of the live-action series.

Stranger Things: Tales of ’85 gets inspiration from 80s animated shows like The Real Ghostbusters, Beetlejuice and Transformers.

Netflix showed exclusive footage at the Annecy Film Festival. So far it hasn’t been leaked to the internet…

The official synopsis from Netflix reads:

“Welcome back to Hawkins in the stark winter of 1985, where the original characters must fight new monsters and unravel a paranormal mystery terrorizing their town in Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, an epic new animated series.”

Netflix provided the following details on Stranger Things: Tales of ’85:

• Takes place in the winter of 1985, between Season 2 (October 1984) and Season 3 (July 1985)
• The Duffer Brothers confirmed it is canon
• Main characters include: Mike Wheeler, Will Byers, Eleven, Dustin Henderson, Lucas Sinclair, Max Mayfield, and Jim Hopper
• New character Nikki Baxter a “tinker” with a pink mohawk
• the series promises new mysteries and new monsters

There’s no word on how many episodes will be in the animated series. Stranger Things: Tales of ’85 is set to premiere on Netflix in 2026.
